Oxford Handbook of Psychiatry

Description

Covering psychiatry from A to Z this book is indeed an essential for every student, trainee and even the experienced psychiatrist. Subjects ranging from the arcane to the obvious leap out with clarity. The authors’ style is concise yet inspiring.
Theoretical aspects from psychoanalysis to the dopamine hypothesis are covered with attention to ‘real-world’ psychiatric applications. This text succeeds where others have failed in terms of ease of use and being pocket-sized!
If you’re a foundation year trainee-in-waiting then don’t hesitate to get in line for this essential ‘road-map’ for your psychiatric post. As someone who is about to sit their membership I have already found it invaluable.
Highly recommended!

I recently bought this book for starting a block working in psychiatry. On my first meeting with my consultant he was about to advise me to buy this book when I showed him I had already bought it-his feeling is that this book would be sufficient for anyone (such as myself) who is new to psychiatry and will be working there for a short term (eg 4 months/6months) and covers all the neccesary topics. Obviously if you were to have a specialist interest in a specific condition or be in a subspeciality of psychiatry then worth checking what your department would suggest however if you’re going to general psychiatry or doing oncalls there this should do the trick. It’s also quite an interesting read. Covering psychiatry from A to Z this book is indeed an essential for every student, trainee and even the experienced psychiatrist. Neurobehavioral Anatomy

Book Synopsis
Thoroughly revised and updated to reflect key advances in behavioral neurology, Neurobehavioral Anatomy, Third Edition is a clinically based account of the neuroanatomy of human behavior centered on a consideration of behavioral dysfunction caused by disorders of the brain. A concise introduction to brain-behavior relationships that enhances patient care and assists medical students, the book also serves as a handy reference to researchers, neuroscientists, psychiatrists, and geriatricians.

The book outlines how cognitive and emotional functions are represented and organized in the brain to produce the behaviors regarded as uniquely human. It reviews the effects of focal and diffuse brain lesions, and from this analysis a conception of the normal operations of the healthy brain emerges. Christopher M. Filley integrates data and material from different disciplines to create a concise and accessible synthesis that informs the clinical understanding of brain-behavior relationships. Clinically practical and theoretically stimulating, the book is an invaluable resource for those involved in the clinical care and study of people with neurobehavioral disorders.

Including a useful glossary and extensive references guiding users to further research, the third edition will be of significance to medical students, residents, fellows, practicing physicians, and the general reader interested in neurology.

Reviewer: Cristina Orfei, MD(University of Illinois at Chicago)

Description: This is an updated and concise review of the correlation between neuroanatomy and behavior. In only 227 pages, this well-referenced book covers the different manifestations of aphasias, agnosias, acute confusional states, dementias, and traumatic brain injury and presents an in-depth discussion of the different frontal lobe syndromes. The first edition was published in 1995.

Purpose: The purpose is to address the large audience of students and clinical practitioners who have an interest in the function of the brain and its clinical manifestations. It is simply worded and well written, meeting the purpose of a quick review with several up-to-date references, and fulfilling the author's objective of explaining in simple terms a complex scenario.

Audience: The author's expertise in behavioral neurology and its clinical aspects makes this book a useful addition to the library of every student of neurology and psychiatry and clinical psychologists. The mature clinician will enjoy the discussion of the evolution of functional neuroimaging, new theory in traumatic brain injury, and the genetic abnormalities of dementia, Alzheimer's type.

Features: The reader will learn the complex interactions of subcortical structures in the disturbance of arousal, the differential diagnosis of acute confusional state, and the perplexing definition of consciousness where neuronal activity is transformed into subjective conscious experience. The description of the case of Phineas Gage in the discussion of frontal lobe syndromes exemplifies the role of the orbitofrontal cortex in disinhibition and distractibility. The medial frontal and dorsolateral syndromes have different characteristics with apathy, mutism, or transcortical motor aphasia, paresis of lower limbs, and perseveration and impairment of executive functions. The concept of higher cerebral vs. high cortical functions is addressed in chapter 12 on the dementias, documenting the importance of the subcortical structures (thalamus, basal ganglia, and cerebral white matter) as participants in the neuronal network that serve specific higher functions. The importance of genetic inheritance in Alzheimer's disease is identified in abnormalities of chromosome 14, 19, and 21 in five percent of Alzheimer's patients, while the role of synaptic loss is emphasized more than amyloid deposition in the pathogenesis of this condition.

Assessment: This book, with its simple format and clarity of exposition, will open the door on the complexity of human behavior to a large audience.

Oxford Handbook of Clinical Examination and Practical Skills

Description

This book is an excellent addition to the ever-popular Oxford Handbook series. It has all the usual stuff that you’d expect in a clinical examination book, but it also includes detailed coverage of many essential practical procedures (e.g. ABG) and has good sections on psychiatry and paeds. Medical ethics even make a brief appearance. In addition, there is a large data interpretation chapter which covers all the essentials such as interpretation of the ECG and chest X-ray. The style is crisp and to the point with a distinctive, sometimes quirky but erudite tone that I find enjoyable to read – and the text is peppered with interesting facts and historical curiosities. For instance, did you know that cat allergy is caused by one of the proteins in feline saliva (their fur is covered in it through licking) or that Abraham Lincoln may have had Marfan’s syndrome (his slightly blurred face in photographs is probably a reflection of head nodding due to aortic regurgitation – De Musset’s sign!). Best of all, despite being the only handbook in full colour, it only costs about twenty quid and it just about fits in your pocket. Five stars!

This is an absolutly fantastic text, and one I would recommend to all clinical medical students. The established process for examining each system is gone through in a step-by-step fashion in a succint yet thorough manner that is easy to read and digest. There is also a good level of detail on physical signs and their associated medical conditions for performing well in an OSCE and for when clerking patients for real. This concise, well organised approach makes it excellent for swatting up with whilst on the ward between seeing patients, and the small size makes in ammenable for carrying in your pocket. For each system there are also excellent recommendations on relevant good history taking.

The back section of the book contains more step-by-step details of how to perform more advanced practical procedures for junior doctors and simple ones like venepuncture and cannulation for medical students. There is also an excellent section on interpreting ECGs and CXRs.

This is one of the best medical textbooks I own (and I own quite a few!) and one of the finest in the oxford handbook range for medical students. I am sure it would also be a great aide memoire for junior doctors.

Oxford Handbook of Clinical Specialties

Description

Increased use of colour and diagrams in this new edition make it easier to read and more valuable as a quick reference text in clinical settings…impeccably laid out, clear, concise and thorough. (British Journal of Hospital Medicine )
This is a useful book to carry into the clinic in your pocket. Finally the new edition has arrived and in short it’s brilliant.” –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
My copy of this book is breaking apart at the spine and has a few missing pages: this is a testment only to the fact that I’ve used it so much. I’m an SHO in Paediatrics now, and, since I bought this book in third year I have used it countless times as both as a quick reference guide, and during revision for numerous exams. I quickly came to rely on this book and it’s yellow-skinned cousin (OHCM) for brief and memorable introductions to ailments I encountered on the wards and during my revision. This edition is divided into several chapters including Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dermatology, A£E, Orthopaedics, General Practice, and Psychiatry (amongst others).

While some might feel the poetic subtext on many of the pages is somewhat annoying and pretentious (read the page entitled ‘a journey on foot’ in the orthopaedic section), I have always found it a welcome augmentation to the raw medical dimension contained within the books pages.

This book together with the Handbook for Clinical Medicine is absolutely essential for survival on the wards. If you havn’t got a clue what’s wrong with the patient, what the consultant is talking about or what you are meant to do next- these books help you out. They are compact enough to stick in your pocket, but have enough information crammed in to tell you everything that you could be expected to know about any condition. As I said this is a must for any med. student or junior doc. The proof really is that these aren’t some new fancy books that have to be put to the test now, everyone I’ve spoken to seems to have been using them for years- Good Luck!

The Neuroscience of Clinical Psychiatry

Description

After extensively searching, I found and read this book last year– and thought it was fabulous. I chose it as our chief textbook for our Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (MSN) program’s course on neuroscience for nurse clinicians and the student feedback this year has been great. The students tell me that they truly enjoy reading the text and a few have said "I couldn’t put it down." What a radical change from the dry and dense (and frankly, over our heads) neuroscience textbook we were using in the past.
I became familiar with this book when I was searching for a text for the clinical neuroscience class I offer each year to graduate students in the Department of Psychology at my university. The book is what I would describe as "deceptively good." The authors haven’t put a lot of pizzazz (sp?) into their writing; this is, after all, an upper level college textbook. However, the presentation of the material is well organized, and there is actually an awfully lot of good, up-to-date information succinctly included here. The latter is especially true if one is also conscientious about examining the figures – which, thankfully, in most instances supplement rather than merely repeat the text. I’m pleased with the selection of this text for my class. It’s too early to tell about my students’ response. But as someone who has taught in this area for quite a while, I know from experience we’ve long needed a book like this to introduce students to the exciting discoveries occurring in the realm of clinical neuroscience.

The Psychiatric Interview (Practical Guides in Psychiatry)

Description

This is a great book. I used it when I was in residency. I am now a practicing psychiatrist. I can still, even to this day, see how this book has shaped my clinical interviewing in a positive way. It is practical, it takes the theory and gives you examples of how to phrase things. It has mneumonics that help you remember all of the different parts of the interview. it enables you to do a pretty complete diagnositic interview when you need to. I remember getting compliments from my supervisors after they observed my interview when I started using these methods. It is a great book to get when you are wondering about how to get started when you first begin conducting interviews
This is an excellent book for psychiatric resident from first to fourth year.
I have seen how poorly were conducted some mock boards by certain residents because of interviewing skills difficulty.
